Window Scrappage Scheme, is it a legitimate Government directive?
Be very wary of double glazing companies which offer you the Window Scrappage Scheme.
The Government does not run a scrappage scheme this is just a marketing ploy.
The National Window Scrappage Scheme is definitely NOT a Government scheme. It does not matter how old your windows are. As well as how long you have lived at the property. Equally important, the window scrappage scheme does not receive any government financial support.
The ASA has received numerous complaints regarding false and misleading claims of a Government Scrappage Scheme.
Some companies are jumping on the back of the Government’s car scrappage scheme. Deceiving customers into thinking that there is also a Government Window Scrappage Scheme.
Dishonest companies appear to be offering up to 35% off. Customers are offered an additional 40% off if their home can be used as a demonstration house.
PLUS £2,000 off new windows and doors. However, the con gets more deceitful as you are obligated to buy the most expensive double glazing energy efficient models to qualify for the Scrappage Scheme.
Large Double Glazing installation companies are using ‘put on to take off’ discounters, included in their Scrappage scheme discount.
The bogus Window Scrappage Scheme was launched by a major National Double Glazing installation company in 2010, then again in 2013 & 2014.
In 2012 a Scrappage Scheme e-petition was launched. With 4,468 signatures, however, the National Window Scrappage Scheme was declined by the Government.
Below is the Government response to the e-petition for The Scrappage Scheme
“The Government agrees that energy efficiency has an important part to play if we are to achieve our carbon reduction targets. The benefits of energy efficiency for households are clear. Saving money on energy bills, reducing reliance on imported energy. Hence helping householders reduce their carbon emissions.
However given the high cost of replacement windows, typically £5,000 to £10,000 for a small home. The marginal improvement in performance. Particularly when replacing like-for-like double glazed windows; and given that band, C windows will be the minimum standard. Permitted by building regulations from October 2010. A window scrappage scheme is unlikely to be cost-effective on energy efficiency and carbon savings grounds.”
